Pipe welding is used to both fabricate piping systems to carry any number of fluids, such as water, petroleum, and air; and to build structural items such as gates, truck racks, and go-cart frames. This chapter concentrates more on building structures. However, with few exceptions, the skills you will learn can be used for piping systems. For example, most piping systems use forged fittings while structural items use shop-fabricated fittings. The difference is that forged fitting types are limited and a lot more expensive, while fabricated fittings can be made to fit any angle and cost only a little time and effort.
